Duties & Responsibilities

Mission Statement

The mission of the Office of the City Attorney is to provide timely, accurate and professional legal services to the City Council, City Manager, Department Heads and City Boards and Commissions as needed.  The City Attorney may not provide legal advice to private citizens.

Functions

The City Attorney is the primary legal advisor to the Paris City Council, the Paris City Manager and to all City Departments, City Boards and Commissions. The City Attorney’s responsibilities also include preparation or review of all City ordinances, resolutions, contracts, easements, deeds, and other legal documents, and responding to requests for legal opinions from the City Council, City Manager and other City Department Heads. The City Attorney also serves as the primary legal advisor to the Paris Economic Development Corporation and supports the PEDC Board and Executive Director with their efforts to retain and attract business and industry to Paris, Texas.

Municipal Court Prosecutor

The Municipal Court Prosecutor under the supervision of the City Attorney is responsible for prosecuting all criminal and civil cases in the Municipal Court. Questions regarding a case in the Municipal Court should be directed to the Municipal Court Prosecutor.

Procedures to follow when filing a claim:

Provide the information required in Form CA-10 (PDF), Notice of Claim, referenced above, in writing and sign the notice before a Notary Public and mail notice with the following attachments:

Two property damage estimates;
Photographs of damage, if any;
Photocopy of Certificate of Title of damaged vehicle;
Photocopy of medical bills, if any; and
Doctor’s narrative.
